South MEMFix is a short-term community driven effort to inject vitality into intersection of Mississippi Blvd. and Walker by activating the intersection and generally showing what is possible in the neighborhood. Working with local businesses, residents, and community stakeholders the project will re-think the street, activate vacant shopfronts, and change the character of the intersection for one weekend.
During this weekend, local businesses and community members can “test drive” a new neighborhood. South MEMFix is in essence a living planning workshop—where the community actively engages in the design process and provides real-time feedback so that the eventual design reflects the community’s desire. Similar to the successful A New Face for and Old Broad event held on Broad Ave. in 2010, South MEMFix Mississippi / Walker will feature temporary street improvements, pop-up retail, activities for kids and adults, music, cultural heritage exhibits and more.
The goals of the project are to highlight the cultural heritage of the neighborhood, demonstrate the need for retail; activate space; assist with blight elimination; promote local businesses, artists, and designers; and inspire ideas that will help revitalize core city neighborhoods.
